Photo Artist Heath Bennett

We met Heath Bennett at the KAFE in Ubud in January of 2009. He was sitting outside on the balcony of our favorite Healthfood restaurant in Ubud on a sunny Sunday morning. He was sitting at our favorite table, but since we didn’t want to intrude on him, as he was sitting next to a beautiful woman showing her pictures on his Apple computer, looking like a newly wed, we looked for a table inside.
Don and I found a table near a window, only inches away from our usual spot. As I happened to glace through the window I caught a glimpse of a fabulous food image Heath had just pulled up onto his computer screen.
It was a perfect shot of his breakfast before him. More and more professional images came up. I was breathlessly in awe. I got up, walked outside and introduced my self to the two of them. I couldn’t help but notice that both had the most super luminous blue eyes, radiating like angels, as they looked up at me.
I commented on his stunning artistry in his photos and he willingly started to show me more of his artwork. Within minutes I told him that we were about to open our ShangriLa Retreat Center and that we needed pictures of our food and more.
It was as if the Heavens had sent us an angel, because in no time did we agree to meet at ShangriLa to trade photos for room and board, and I felt as if I had been blessed.
Here is what he said about his time at ShangriLa: “It was such a fantastic experience at Shangrila. It’s by far the best place I’ve ever stayed at in Bali!” (read his comment below)
Heath’s photos had been published many well selling cookbooks and yet he was so humble, loving and kind. He is very much spiritual and it shows in all his art. I would like to invite you to have a look at his website: http://www.deccreatives.com

It is a shame how long ago this seems Ilona, even though it is only a little over 9 months ago! Thanks do much for the kind words you have written here, and for Don and your generous hearts. It was such a fantastic experience at Shangrila. It’s by far the best place I’ve ever stayed at in Bali! However I got far more than I expected, a beautiful friendship with yourself and Don. I recall the morning Don offered to take me out into the ocean to swim… For a start, it wasn’t far, just 3 metres from my front door to the water! The water was so warm and clear, and there were so many incredible looking tropical fish. I think what shocked me most was how fish-like Don is in the water! He almost never seemed to need air! So many great memories, thanks again guys.
