Chapter 18 Clearing Odors From New Carpets, Etc.

This procedure has made my life much easier and much more enjoyable. With the many chemicals used in the production of new housing materials, it is sometimes difficult to live in a pollution-free environment. Indoor pollution has become a very real concern in the last few years. We had purchased a “natural” carpet made of woven grasses that was imported from the Far East somewhere. This room-size straw carpet was on the floor only minutes before my eyes were red and I began sneezing. The smell was so strong that we left the house for the day hoping it would air out. Upon returning I had the same reaction and headed straight for the bedroom to get away from the fumes. It was a combination of pesticide and strong straw smells. After a few days of hoping the smell would change I finally announced that I had had enough and wanted to throw it out. Ilona (my partner) had suggested that we try the SE-5 since we had experienced good results one other time ‘clearing’ the formaldehyde smells in a hotel that had just laid new carpets.

I was a bit reluctant as this carpet was very strong smelling, but I took a picture of it and tried the following procedure. Within about fifteen minutes, I could not smell the carpet any more. My eyes cleared-up and I stopped sneezing. I thought that perhaps it was just myself that had changed, but I asked Ilona if she could still smell it and she couldn’t either. We invited some friends over and they couldn’t detect any odor. Perhaps another coincidence, but try it for yourself.

Procedure:

1. Normal Start-up.

2. Place a picture of the carpet in the Cell . (You can also use a small piece of the carpet on the Input Plate.)

3. Type into the computer, “REMOVE ALL NATURAL AND CHEMICAL ODORS” (You can also look-up specific tunings for formaldehyde, etc. Other suspect chemicals are 4-phenyllcyclohexene and Styrene-butadiene.)

4. Set the Amplitude at 100, Measure Switch to Balance position. Notes:

This sounds very simple, but I had great results. One other addition that I have experimented with, is to replicate the IDFs from a piece of wool to a synthetic Berber carpet. Almost everyone that comes into the house now comments on our wonderful “wool” carpet. They usually get down on their hands and knees and feel the carpet, and it feels just like wool! I have noticed that synthetics (nylon in this case) do not store the IDFs forever. They have held for about 2 years but it is time to redo the wool replicating process, as I have noticed the effect starting to fade.
